Mercury Poisoning SymptomsMercury poisoning has symptoms that can be vague and are many times misdiagnosed. Mercury is a nerve toxin; its residue tends to settle in scar tissue, the eyes, brain, tailbone, and kidney.Mercury is used as a binder in pharmaceutical drugs (including heart medication and vaccines), pesticides and herbicides, cosmetics and hair dyes, amalgam dental fillings, dentures, batteries, older style thermometers, petroleum products, and processed grains. Because of the above and other mercury pollution, it is also found in seafood and groundwater. Thimerosol (aka Merthiolate) is a form of mercury still used in vaccines, and is thought to be a major cause of autism and crib death in the USA. Sources of Mercury PoisoningA major contributor to the mercury problem is amalgam dental fillings. Commonly called "silver fillings," they actually contain very little silver, and as much as 40% mercury. The American Dental Association stood by amalgam fillings for decades, going as far as blackballing dentists who spoke out against them. Only recently has the ADA decided not to promote amalgam- but supposedly the reason they did so is because amalgam fillings expand and contract to a greater degree than the teeth they are set into, which causes cracking and breaking of the tooth. The cracking is a real issue, but presumably, they aren't mentioning the mercury poisoning symptoms issue because of potential legal liability (I imagine it would be HUGE). Our oceans are heavily polluted with mercury, primarily because so much coal is burned to produce electricity (the smoke from burning coal is washed out of the air by rain. Since 3/4 of our planet is covered by ocean, it takes the brunt). This excess mercury ends up in seafood: those at the top of the food chain are most affected, of course, because toxins concentrate more and more as they move "up the ladder." Then we eat the contaminated fish (or other ocean creatures) and become the final repository for the heavy metals and other toxins. According to Phyllis Balch, in Prescription for Natural Cures , fish or other seafood that are considered to be generally low in mercury are Anchovies, Catfish, Clams, Pacific Cod, Crab, Pacific Flatfish, Herring, Mahi mahi, Oysters, Pacific Pollock, wild Alaskan Salmon, Sardines, farmed Scallops, and farmed Tillapia. Fish considered to be high in mercury include Chilean Seabass, Atlantic Cod, Grouper, Atlantic Flatfish, Halibut, Lobster, Mackerel, Ocean Perch, Orange Roughy, Oreo Dory, Atlantic Pollock, Pacific Rockfish, Shark, Snappers, Striped Bass, Swordfish, and Tuna. According to some sources, Albacore is the lowest in mercury of the tunas. But now, other studies have said Albacore is highest in mercury. (I say, "If it tastes metallic, Don't Eat It!") Evidently, tuna species prefer different ocean depths, so their heavy metal exposure varies according to type. Now that fish oil is in the news for helping to prevent cardiovascular disease, it seems that scads of fish oil brands have sprouted up. Fish oil supplements are possibly the only case where "natural" is not "better." Check your labels carefully: you'll want fish oil to be "molecularly distilled" (or a similar description) to make sure the heavy metals have been removed. How to Avoid Mercury Poisoning SymptomsThe first way to avoid mercury poisoning is to refuse any metal your dentist may want to install in your mouth. There are alternatives.Second is to limit your intake of high-mercury seafood species, especially if you're pregnant or breastfeeding. Take a quality multiple vitamin supplement, broken cell-wall chlorella (algae), and extra vitamin C. This seems to help keep the mercury moving out of your body. There are also herbs and homeopathic formulas that safely break up (chelate) the mercury and other heavy metal toxicity. A medical doctor (MD) in a holistic practice can offer intravenous EDTA chelation, as well. And finally, to help rid yourself of mercury poisoning symptoms, eat lots of high sulfur vegetables like onions, garlic, broccoli or radish sprouts, and eggs from healthy chickens.
